I think I climbed every tree in the neighborhood when I was preteen, before getting into sports.
My favorite was a neighbors’ pear tree. I bet I ate more of their (green) pears than their whole family with 4 children did.
My least favorite was a pine tree of some sort that had sticky resin and was by our church’s rectory, but I conquered that one also.
I always liked to push the limits on how high I could go.
Funny. I just realized, I’ve owned this house 33 years and don’t recall doing any tree climbing here. It would take me a ladder to get started. The main branches from the trunks are all above my reach, not lower to the ground like that live oak above. I’ve seen several of my cats up in them and my dog daydreaming about following. But she’s no malinois.
My trees are in need of some pruning though. I need to check my health insurance coverages and which of those offers internet.

I was also a major tree climber as a kid. Years later, with a family of my own, we moved to a rural property in NW Oregon with many (many!) trees. So naturally I built a platform in the branches of a big maple for my young kids to play.
Well, as it turned out, I wound up spending more time up in that tree than the kids (it was a nice place for a nap on a warm afternoon ) - they apparently did not inherit my arboreal ways. (Waddya gonna do? )
@cengland0@phendrick@Weboh@macromeh That platform sounds really nice. The trees I remember most fondly were in Reno, where we lived briefly. One was a massive willow in the front yard of a small house; if it was breezy I could sit up there & feel the branches sway a bit. I also learned some entomology; there was a small group of aphids on it & I squished them with a twig. Then I saw ants running around in what looked like great consternation. They were running up to each other & twiddling their antennae & I realized they were spreading the news about this terrible crisis! Their cows had been massacred!
Then we moved to a house near a park that had a really wonderful tree with wide stretched out branches that I could straddle & watch the world from.
And there were willow trees on campus, where my father worked; they grew beside a pond where a group of white swans lived. I could sit in one and watch the swans sail around, and one day I saw a muskrat swimming back & forth right below me with mouthfuls of grass, building its den somewhere. Really nice memories. Halcyon days.
@cengland0@f00l@macromeh@phendrick@Weboh Okay. I won’t.
Around here it’s usually raccoons though. I don’t want to have anything to do with them but they come steal my apples sometimes.
@mycya4me July is now Fall?!? But seriously folks…Enough of Christmas in July, especially when it continues on until December. Even though I like Halloween, I don’t need Fall colors, pumpkins, et al until at least late September.
@mycya4me@tohar1
The fucked up thing is you can’t buy Halloween decorations in the store in October anymore bc they put them out so early and everything is sold out. How am I supposed to know what I need when I don’t set my stuff up till the USUAL time, which is October 1st or later.
@mycya4me@tohar1 It seems like Thanksgiving is pretty much just a grocery store season around here; nobody else (that I’ve noticed) decorates for it, and the old custom of “Xmas Season Starts With The End Of The Macys Parade” has been well and truly trashed in favor of Black Friday In June!!1!11!
@hchavers There was much lampooning of that for a while, but both the PSMania and the sarcasm seems to have dialed back a bunch. Of course, this year, who the hell has time (or a budget) for either pie or levity?
The leaves fall off the trees.
@cengland0 That happens in springtime in Florida.
/image live oak

@cengland0 @Weboh Where are the kids? That tree WANTS to be climbed.
@cengland0 @phendrick @Weboh
Hey, I want to climb it!
On of my favorite things to do as a kid.
@cengland0 @Kyeh @Weboh
I’ll catch you!
(Maybe. How big are you now?)

Apparently, according to recent news reports, we are advised Do Not Mess With Muskrats And Badgers.
This practice is said to be Bad For Humans.
@cengland0 @f00l @macromeh @phendrick @Weboh Okay. I won’t.
Around here it’s usually raccoons though. I don’t want to have anything to do with them but they come steal my apples sometimes.
@cengland0 @Kyeh @macromeh @phendrick @Weboh
Some swimmers have had tangles with badgers and muskrats recently.
I think in the Tahoe area.
They are bigger and far stronger than people who grew up on cartoons might suppose.
Sometimes they get territorial. Tho supposedly not very often.
@cengland0 @macromeh @phendrick @Weboh @f00l Huh! The one I saw was pretty small. Maybe there are different varieties.
It gets colder outside
@heartny Or, in Florida, when you have a morning below 75. So, chilly, like you said.
When you really see Halloween & Christmas decorations in the stores.
@mycya4me July is now Fall?!?
But seriously folks…Enough of Christmas in July, especially when it continues on until December. Even though I like Halloween, I don’t need Fall colors, pumpkins, et al until at least late September.
@tohar1 Yes I too like Halloween, Thanksgiving & Christmas. Like you said Christmas in July… it is Nothing to do with the season, Just about $$$$.
The wild thing is I have not seen any Thanksgiving stuff.
Let do ONLY 1 holiday at a time & no more than 30 before it too!
@mycya4me …and the congregation loudly says, “AMEN!!!”
@mycya4me @tohar1

@mycya4me @werehatrack Sad but true!
@tohar1 @werehatrack Yep!.. It is Not about the “Holiday” it is only about the $$$
Pumpkin Spice and Gingerbread flavoring shows up everywhere.
@hchavers There was much lampooning of that for a while, but both the PSMania and the sarcasm seems to have dialed back a bunch. Of course, this year, who the hell has time (or a budget) for either pie or levity?
When the temperatures don’t quite top out at 100 degrees anymore.
@phendrick Came here to say this.
Walmart starts putting out the Xmas crap in the stores.
I stop sweating through my shirt walking the 20 feet to my car.
Apart from the leaves on the trees, when I start seeing caramel apples at my ice cream shop
The trick or treaters come out.
When I stop having to change into dry shirts five times a day at work.
@edguyver14 I’m glad I’m not the only one.
When it starts getting less hot.
When the temps get cooler, the air feels crispier, and the leaves start to turn.
The spiders are building webs all around in the garden and I’m forever walking into them, face first. I know they mean me no harm,
@bee1doll Sad thing is Spiders happen year round!
@bee1doll What an unusual hobby…
@macromeh It’s taken years to perfect.
@mycya4me True. Where I am though, the orb spinners really ramp up at this time of year. And over a path, face height, seems to be an ideal location.
@bee1doll @mycya4me

Scoring human prey would be a long shot, but I guess it would only take one to be set for life…
@bee1doll @macromeh @mycya4me

God… I miss Gary Larson…
When I wake up with three or four cats on top of me in bed. That’s the surest sign the weather is changing!
@mamajoan OMG… so true… But I have only 1 cat. Somehow he has become extremely spoiled rotten.
@mycya4me
As is right and proper.
@mamajoan @mycya4me
He does kind of look like that in the picture you posted in the dog thread.

@mamajoan @mycya4me Oops, I was playing with trying to make the link into text but obviously I blew it.
When I see the ground rushing up to my face.
@macromeh Have you not learned how to throw yourself at the ground and miss?
@algae1221 I’m still working on it, but the learning curve is brutal.
When the daily high kinda maybe possibly drops perhaps hopefully from over 100F every day to maybe a high of 99F
Please please please.
Usually happens early Sept to late September most years.
Actual cool weather might have to wait until late Oct or early Nov
“Cool weather” does not means sweater or jacket. “Cool weather” means not sweating while sitting out at 9pm.
It’s so nice each year when there are no more daily highs in the 90s or above.

Second sign of fall
Football everywhere. Practice. Worry about players surviving the heat.
Games.
Practice hits the HS teams around Aug 1 or so. I think college is similar.
The cowboys don’t care they have their training complex in Frisco complete I’m pretty sure w full AC.
Initial non-count games start late August
“The season” (games that count) start around Sept 1 or Labor Day.
Hey! Fall is here!
Watch Jerry of Planet JerryWorld torpedo the Cowboy season again!
I saw this at one of the mall department stores yesterday! Fall must be here, right?!
